Project Background
A large 2×660MW coal-fired power station operates 24 hours a day. The belt conveyor system delivers raw coal from the coal yard to crushers and then to boiler bunkers. Materials include mixed lump coal, fine coal and shale impurities. Lump coal size can reach 150 mm. The working environment is dusty, humid in rainy seasons, with coal containing abrasive shale and occasional sharp rock fragments. Original common rubber belts suffered surface abrasion, gouging and edge tearing. Frequent replacements disrupted fuel feeding and threatened stable boiler operation.
Challenges
- Abrasive coal and shale cause continuous wear on belt cover
- Lump coal dropping from high height creates strong impact damage at transfer points
- High dust and moisture accelerate rubber aging and belt edge damage
- Continuous power generation requires high reliability and minimal unplanned stops.
Solution
Heavy-duty abrasion-resistant EP canvas rubber conveyor belts were chosen. Thick top rubber cover improves wear resistance. Reinforced edge design resists tearing. Impact idlers are installed at loading points, plus belt scrapers and side skirt plates to reduce coal fines buildup and material spillage.
Application Result
After commissioning, belt service life increased from 7 months to over 22 months. Sudden belt damage incidents dropped greatly. Stable coal supply to the boiler was maintained. The power plant reduced annual maintenance and belt replacement costs by approximately 28%. Material leakage and dust pollution at transfer points were also effectively controlled.
