Project Background

A large integrated steel mill needs to transport sinter, iron pellets and coke for blast furnace feeding. Sinter temperature is normally 120–200°C, with hard, sharp granular particles. The conveying system runs continuously to feed the blast furnace. Previously used standard belts suffered heat aging, surface cracking and rapid abrasion. Belt failures would directly interrupt blast furnace feeding and cause huge production losses.

Challenges

  • Warm/hot sinter accelerates rubber aging and cover cracking
  • Hard sinter and coke particles bring severe abrasive wear
  • Continuous high throughput with 24/7 operation
  • Fine sinter powder easily sticks to the belt and accumulates on rollers.

Solution

Medium heat-resistant & abrasion-resistant EP rubber conveyor belts are applied. Heat-resistant top cover compound withstands hot sinter. Reinforced carcass resists high continuous tension. Belt cleaners are fitted to remove adhered sinter fines.

Application Result

Belt service life extended from 5–6 months to more than 18 months. Unplanned shutdowns caused by belt failure were reduced significantly. Stable delivery of sinter and coke guaranteed blast furnace continuous operation. The mill saved a large amount of spare belt inventory and maintenance labor cost.
